Sustainable tourism development

Sustainable tourism is more than just environmental protection or growth stimulation. It is ‘ethically, socially and culturally adapted with a long-term perspective, i.e. in relation to today’s as well as future generations, as well as economically stable, purposeful and profitable’ (forum environment and development, 1999).

For a sustainable development of tourism it is crucial that economic, social and ecological perspectives are not considered in isolation, but are integrated with each other. Such an integrated approach is the most likely to avoid or overcome unnecessary and resource-draining conflicts between different stakeholder groups and to maximise the use of potential synergies.

The NIT advises tourism stakeholders on how to achieve more sustainability in tourism, develops projects together with stakeholders, moderates discussion processes and develops methods and concepts for support.
