On the occasion of the recently completed final report, the Umweltbundesamt, together with the Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz und nukleare Sicherheit, published a press release highlighting the importance of the study “Folgen des Klimawandels für den Tourismus” (Consequences of Climate Change for Tourism). The NIT published it together with the Potsdam Institute für Klimafolgenforschung and the Alpenforschungsinstitut under the direction of Fresh-Thought-Consulting.
In June 2021, the Umweltbundesamt published the technical brochure “Tourism umd Klimawandel – Übersicht über Daten, Studien und Werkzeuge” (Tourism and Climate Change – Overview of Data, Studies and Tools) with the accompanying folder/leaflet “Klimaschutz und Klimawandelanpassung – Informationen und Handlungsansätze für touristische Destinationen” (Climate Protection and Climate Change Adaptation – Information and Approaches for Tourist Destinations). Both can be downloaded (DE) free of charge from the UBA website.
As part of the project „Folgen des Klimawandels für den Tourismus in den deutschen Alpen- und Mittelgebirgsregionen, Küstenregionen, auf den Badetourismus und flussbegleitende Tourismusformen (Rad-, Wander- und Wassertourismus)“ (Consequences of climate change for tourism in the German Alpine and low mountain regions, coastal regions, on seaside tourism and river-related forms of tourism (cycling, hiking and water tourism)) (2017-2020), the action guide “Anpassung an den Klimawandel: die Zukunft im Tourismus gestalten” (Adaptation to climate change: shaping the future in tourism) for destinations was already developed in May 2020 with the cooperation of the NIT.
Based on a comprehensive literature and data analysis of climate impacts on the tourism industry, the research project aims to identify economically and ecologically recommendable climate adaptation measures and to describe them in a practical and feasible way for the various tourist destinations in Germany. The results were already fed back to practitioners during the project. This feedback has been incorporated into the action guide and is supplemented by information on existing funding instruments for adapting the tourism industry to the consequences of climate change.
